The replacement of front steering axle king pins is still a matter of concern in the trucking industry. Front suspension king pin sets are presently available to both the original equipment manufacturer and the aftermarket having straight, cylindrical king pins. Three bushing options are available consisting of steel backed bronze, plastic composites, and spiral steel.
A new king pin has emerged from years of research and development. Kaiser PLUS with its curvilinear concept gives the industry a superior king pin option.

WHY FAILURES

The straight, cylindrical king pin under load generates an extremely high stress point. This occurs where the end or edge of the king pin engages the bushing inside the bore. The instant load is applied metal to metal contact occurs between the pin and bushing. Then failure starts. This high stress load results in rapid wear of the bushing. The load support area increases after the edge wears down. Failure is unavoidable, the life of the bushing has been reduced. It is a matter of time before complete failure. (see diagram)

GREASE CARRIES THE LOAD

All king pin applications rely on grease to carry the load. The lubrication or grease film between pin and bushing controls the life of the assembly.

Only after the straight cylindrical pin wears down the bushing can grease start to carry the load. However, the heat generated from the friction between pin and bushing has caused grease degradation, contributing to the unavoidable failure.

CURVILINEAR CONCEPT

The curvilinear pin has a trusto-conical geometry each end. This design has a much larger contact or bearing support area, without high stress. Up to 150% more contact area than straight cylindrical pins. Curvilinear also maintains the grease film necessary to carry the load. The bushing runs 33% cooler due to the curvilinear surface and increased grease capacity. This results in longer life and better lubrication at a lower cost. Performance comparisons between straight pin and Kaiser PLUS have proved the Kaiser PLUS superiority. (see diagram)
